This is more a memoir than a blog post. Having worked on and with technology all my life, I am loathe to take a laptop on anything I call a vacation. My riding partner, Fred, is attached to his laptop at the hip! Day one dawned with the very real possibility of rain from a former hurricane, now tropical depression. Not to be disappointed we were greeted with steady rain right around Toledo. Fortunately, it was brief and only moistened the leathers. the ride down I-75 was uneventful and we escaped the national freeway system in Findlay. Jumping off on US-66 we proceeded to traverse small town Ohio. I know the Interstate system is efficient, but it transports us past so many interesting and picturesque places of Americana. Did you know that the first dental college in the United States was established in Bainbridge, Ohio? Me neither. Yet there was a small brick building housing a dental museum of sorts. Got me to wondering. Just who were the great "dentists" of their time? I can think of many famous doctors, (Salk, Beaumont, Freud, Hippocrates), but no dentists come to mind! Someday when I have more time I will have to stop and find out! The rest of the trip to Hillsboro was pleasant and dry! Arriving in town, and only having a general knowledge of our hotels location, I make the 1st of what was to be a repeating pattern of turning the wrong way. Not that I have a bad sense of direction, it's quite good actually, but more like being forced to flip a coin and it always coming up tails while I call heads! After a short trip to the Eastern edge of town, I get out the trusty iPhone and punch in the hotels address. Something else is beginning to become apparent. My riding partner, Fred, is quite adept at securing our nights lodging but not quite so good on details like reservation confirmations. Not that he did not have them, but more like he forgot to bring them! This pattern too would repeat itself throughout our trip! Tomorrow, stage 2 of our "Ride to Norfolk".
Does that mean that in addition to making reservations I'm supposed to remember them? What a novel concept. I'll have to remember that for the next road trip. I might need some help with that.
ReplyDeleteI researched the Dental Museum; neat stuff. Dr. John Harris is the father of modern dentistry in the U.S. and started the first dental school. Just think, we rode right past it.
